Most likely you heard some Pastor say,
“We are to pick up our cross and bear it”
I guess it would be wise to question,
What “cross” are we supposed
To Be taking up and bear?
Is it a “cross” of our own making,
Which because of sin, that we “bear”?
And is that the “cross” we are to take up, or
Is there some other type of “cross” Jesus
is referring to?
Frequently, I hear many Christians say,
“Oh, I’ve got such a heavy cross to bear”
Which is a reference really to their lifestyle —
& Not so much for the One Who actually took the
Cross, and bore all our sins, which includes sins
That we chose due to the way we live for self.
Cherished sin, and all its consequences CAN be
More than what we are able to “bear” –
Jesus promises that HE will NOT give us “MORE than
What we can bear” * – that can only happen, as
We take His yoke upon us, so that our
burden is light,
“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light”
*1 Corinthians 10:13-14
I believe Luke 9:22-24, 26 may be best gospel rendition
Of the words Christ spoke on the subject of bearing
The cross. Read it for yourself.
Whoever follows Jesus will suffer persecution, and this
Is what we are to carry. It is this type of “cross” God
Will Not put on us, “more” than what we can “bear”
The cross placed upon Christ was more than His
human nature could bear.* Only as Christ’s human
Nature had fused with His Supernatural Nature, as
God, could He take our sins upon Him ON the cross.
*(My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?”)
A similar theme occurs, as we learn how to bear
That cross we pick up. It is only as we rely on that
Supernatural Strength God provides, are we
Then able to carry the cross to the End.
We are NOT asked to bear “our sins” – ONLY Jesus
Could do that as our Saviour. God asks us to put down
Our sin, and GIVE them to Him – as He has born them
Already ON His cross.
We are not called to bear those sins. we are called to
Bear the consequences of a holy life, to suffer
Persecution as Jesus did, because of His
“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus
shall suffer persecution.” 2 Timothy 3:12
The following scene is a reminder to the world,
that Jesus in His natural humanity was unable to
carry His Own cross. Yet it was His God Nature
That kept Him ON that rugged cross!
“And when they had mocked…[Jesus], they took off
the purple from Him, and put His own clothes on Him,
and led Him out to crucify Him. And they compel one
Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the
country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear
His cross. And they bring Him unto the place
Golgotha, which is, being interpreted,
The place of a skull.”
“These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy
might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”
